RICS releases risk outlook report for the surveying profession

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' (RICS) Standards and Regulation Board (SRB) has released its inaugural risk outlook report. This comprehensive analysis examines the economic and structural factors impacting the surveying profession, offering guidance on how members and regulated firms can proactively address emerging challenges. The report highlights 14 key areas of focus, encompassing a range of issues from talent acquisition and professional development to adapting to climate change, technological innovations, and revisions to home survey standards. To account for regional variations, the report is divided into two sections: a global risk assessment and a UK-specific outlook. This structure provides tailored insights for professionals operating in different geographical contexts.

Construction disciplinary trends: dishonesty, acting without integrity and competence

Our Construction team's analysis of recent published disciplinary cases against architects and surveyors has revealed four key trends. The first three trends (CPD failings, engagement letters issues and dishonesty or acting without integrity) are the subject of fuller analysis on our website. Additional trends have emerged from our ongoing monitoring of published decisions: an increase in professionals being disciplined for competency or advice failings. In the past year, eight architects and one surveyor were disciplined for providing inadequate professional services. Historically, this would more likely have been considered a private civil matter, rather than a regulatory issue. However, the regulators' focus on competence is unsurprising given the new competency requirements brought in by the Building Safety Act 2022 and the emphasis in the industry on building safety and increasing standards generally. We have also noted that four architects and two surveyors were sanctioned for criminal convictions in the past 14 months.
